Juniper EX4600-40F-AFI 24-Port 10GbE SFP+ Switch

High-Density, Low-Latency 10GbE/40GbE Switch for Data Center Top-of-Rack

**includes redundant fans & dual AC power supplies.Back to Front Airflow.

The Juniper EX4600-40F-AFI is a high-performance 10GbE/40GbE Ethernet switch designed for enterprise campus distribution layers and modern data center top-of-rack deployments. Built by Juniper Networks, this compact 1RU switch delivers exceptional switching performance, ultra-low latency, and scalable connectivity powered by the reliable Junos OS operating system.

The switch features 24 fixed 10GbE SFP+ ports and 4 fixed 40GbE QSFP+ uplink ports, enabling high-speed connectivity to aggregation or core network infrastructure. Additionally, two expansion module slots allow administrators to add extra 10GbE or 40GbE interfaces, providing flexibility to scale the network as bandwidth requirements grow.

With a 1.44 Tbps switching capacity and 1.07 billion packets per second forwarding rate, the EX4600-40F-AFI delivers wire-rate throughput with sub-microsecond latency (less than 650 ns). This makes it an excellent choice for latency-sensitive applications, high-performance computing environments, and virtualization-driven data centers.

The switch also supports Juniper Virtual Chassis technology, allowing up to 10 EX4600 switches to operate as a single logical device. This capability simplifies network management, increases redundancy, and provides a scalable switching architecture without requiring additional aggregation layers.

Powered by Junos OS, the EX4600-40F-AFI supports advanced Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking features, including BGP, OSPF routing protocols, ECMP load balancing, Data Center Bridging (DCB), and VXLAN support for Layer 2 gateway functionality. These features make the switch suitable for both enterprise campus networks and software-defined data center environments.

The AFI (Airflow In) design provides back-to-front airflow, where air enters through the power supply and fan side and exits through the port side. This cooling configuration is optimized for data centers using hot aisle/cold aisle containment strategies.

For reliability, the switch includes dual redundant hot-swappable AC power supplies and five redundant fan modules, ensuring consistent performance and high availability in mission-critical deployments.

With its high-density 10GbE connectivity, flexible expansion options, and advanced data center features, the Juniper EX4600-40F-AFI delivers a powerful switching platform for enterprise campus cores, virtualization-ready data centers, and high-performance network infrastructures.

FAQs:

Q1. What is the difference between AFI and AFO?
AFI (Airflow In) moves air from the rear (FRUs) to the front (Ports). AFO (Airflow Out) moves air from the front (Ports) to the rear (FRUs). You must ensure the airflow direction matches your data center cooling strategy.

Q2. Can I use the 40GbE ports as 10GbE ports?
Yes. By using QSFP+ to SFP+ breakout cables, each of the four fixed 40GbE ports can be split into four 10GbE ports, increasing your total 10GbE port count.

Q3. Does the EX4600 support stacking with EX4300 switches?
Yes. The EX4600 can participate in a mixed Virtual Chassis with EX4300 switches, providing a flexible solution for combining high-performance distribution and access layers.

Q4. Does this switch support PoE?
No. The EX4600 is a high-speed fiber switch designed for core, distribution, and data center roles; it does not provide Power over Ethernet on its SFP+ ports.

Q5. Is a license required for advanced routing?
The base Junos OS includes standard Layer 3 features. Advanced features like BGP, MPLS, or OSPFv3 may require an "Enhanced" or "Advanced" software license.
