Juniper CHAS-BP3-MX240-S MX240 BP3 Chassis

Compact Enhanced Backplane Chassis for High-Performance MX240 Routing

The Juniper Networks CHAS-BP3-MX240-S MX240 Chassis is a next-generation, compact routing platform designed to deliver carrier-grade performance in space-constrained environments such as central offices (COs), enterprise data centers, and metro edge networks. Featuring the enhanced BP3 (Backplane 3) architecture, this chassis provides the power, scalability, and efficiency required to support modern high-speed interfaces, including 100GbE and 400GbE.

With a compact 5RU form factor, the CHAS-BP3-MX240-S offers exceptional flexibility through its 3-slot design, including 2 flexible slots for Modular Port Concentrators (MPCs) or Switch Control Boards (SCBs) and 1 dedicated SCB slot. Despite its smaller footprint, it delivers up to 3 Tbps of aggregate system capacity, making it a powerful solution for high-density edge deployments.

The advanced BP3 backplane is engineered to support the increased power and high-speed signaling demands of next-generation line cards such as MPC7E, MPC10E, and MPC11E, enabling seamless scalability and future-ready network expansion. This ensures optimal performance for bandwidth-intensive applications while maintaining compatibility with existing MX240 components.

Designed for high availability, the chassis supports 1+1 redundancy for Switch Control Boards and Routing Engines, along with N+1 power redundancy, ensuring continuous operation in mission-critical environments. It also supports Graceful Routing Engine Switchover (GRES) and Nonstop Active Routing (NSR), minimizing downtime and maintaining network stability.

The CHAS-BP3-MX240-S features a high-capacity front-to-back cooling system optimized for modern Trio ASIC-based hardware, ensuring efficient thermal management under heavy workloads. Additionally, its support for both AC and DC power supplies makes it suitable for deployment in both traditional data centers and telecom (-48V) environments.

Combining compact design, high performance, and carrier-grade reliability, the Juniper CHAS-BP3-MX240-S is an ideal choice for service providers and enterprises seeking scalable, high-density edge routing solutions in a space-efficient form factor.

FAQs:

Q1. Why do I need the BP3 version of the MX240?
The BP3 chassis is mandatory if you plan to use newer, high-power line cards like the MPC10E or MPC11E. The original MX240 backplane cannot provide the necessary power wattage or signal frequency for these modules.

Q2. Does this chassis support the same line cards as the MX960?
Yes. One of the primary advantages of the MX-Series is line card commonality. The MPCs used in the MX240 BP3 are the same modules used in the MX480 and MX960.

Q3. How many line cards can I install if I want redundancy?
If you install two SCBs for fabric and control plane redundancy, you are left with
one available slot for a line card. If redundancy is not required, you can use two slots for line cards.

Q4. Is the fan tray included with the CHAS-BP3-MX240-S?
Usually, the "-S" (Spare) part number is just the metal chassis and backplane. High-capacity fan trays, which are required for BP3 performance, must typically be ordered separately.

Q5. Can I use my old SCBE2 in this chassis?
Yes. The BP3 chassis is backward compatible with SCBE2 and SCBE, though you will need the SCBE3 to take full advantage of the backplane's maximum bandwidth potential.
