MX80-48T-AC Juniper MX80 48-port GigE Router Chassis, AC, Fixed
Juniper MX80-48T-AC 48-Port Fixed Gigabit Ethernet Router
High-Density 1GbE Edge Routing Solution with Redundant AC Power
The Juniper MX80-48T-AC is a high-density fixed-configuration edge router designed to deliver powerful routing capabilities and extensive copper connectivity in a compact platform. Built by Juniper Networks, this router is part of the MX Series 3D Universal Edge family, offering carrier-grade performance and advanced routing features powered by the Juniper Trio ASIC architecture.
Designed for environments requiring high port density, the MX80-48T-AC integrates 48 × 10/100/1000Base-T Gigabit Ethernet ports along with four 10GbE SFP+ uplink ports within a single 2RU chassis. This design eliminates the need for additional interface modules while providing flexible connectivity for enterprise campus edges, service provider aggregation networks, and data center management infrastructure.
The router delivers 80 Gbps of full-duplex throughput, ensuring consistent packet forwarding performance for high-traffic environments. Running the full Junos OS, the platform supports advanced networking features including BGP, OSPF, IS-IS routing protocols, MPLS, VPLS, and Layer 2/Layer 3 VPN services, making it suitable for large-scale enterprise and carrier deployments.
Unlike the modular MX80 variant, this model features a fixed-port architecture, replacing front MIC slots with a high-density copper interface. However, it still includes a rear-facing Multiservices MIC (MS-MIC) slot, allowing the addition of integrated services such as hardware-accelerated NAT, stateful firewall capabilities, and J-Flow traffic monitoring.
For reliability and operational stability, the MX80-48T-AC is equipped with dual redundant hot-swappable AC power supplies and field-replaceable fan trays with front-to-back airflow, ensuring efficient cooling in standard rack environments.
With its high-density Gigabit connectivity, advanced routing capabilities, and carrier-grade reliability, the Juniper MX80-48T-AC provides a scalable routing solution for enterprise WAN edges, service provider aggregation layers, and large campus networks.

FAQs:
Q1. Can I add more ports to this router later?
No. The "48T" model is a fixed-port chassis. The front panel does not have slots for additional Modular Interface Cards (MICs). If you need modular flexibility, the standard MX80-AC is the better choice.
Q2. Does this router support Power over Ethernet (PoE)?
No. The 48 copper ports are for data only. Juniper MX-series routers are designed for high-performance edge routing rather than access-layer switching, so they do not provide PoE.
Q3. Are the 10GbE SFP+ ports separate from the 48 copper ports?
Yes. You have a total of 52 ports: 48 ports of 1GbE copper and 4 independent ports of 10GbE SFP+ for high-speed uplinks or peering.
Q4. Can this model be upgraded via software licenses?
Unlike the MX5/MX10/MX40 which can be upgraded to an MX80, the MX80-48T-AC already ships with the full 80 Gbps throughput capacity enabled.
Q5. What is the benefit of the Trio ASIC in this fixed model?
The Trio ASIC provides hierarchical Quality of Service (HQoS), deep packet buffering, and wire-rate performance for complex services, which standard "merchant silicon" switches cannot match.
